Isle of Lime Tjelvar

Isle of Lime Tjelvar, 9 YO, 48%

Matured in five 2nd fill ex-bourbon casks. Three of these held leftovers from some of the very first bottlings from Gotland Whisky; the Shareholder 2016, the Isle of Lime Roma and the Isle of Lime Tjaukle. Limited to 1900 bottles (50 cl).

The Isle of Lime Tjelvar is available to buy in Sweden at SEK 774 (30753).

Nose: Not quite what I was expecting, starting off rather complex and spicy. Sweeter notes of honey and ripe orchard fruits follow, accompanied by pickled ginger and hints of oaky spices.

Taste: Medium-bodied, initially soft and a bit bland. Then it finds its structure, revealing white pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon, along with orchard fruits. Subtle hints of Indian cuisine emerge in the background, with coconut, honey, apricot, apple, and exotic spices.

Finish: Medium-long, where mild spiciness mixes with orchard fruits and a candy-like sweetness.

Comment: Unusual and quite lovely.
