Tomatin Single Cask 1990 28 YO Distillery Exclusive

Tomatin Single Cask 1990 28 YO Distillery Exclusive, 57.5 %

Today I’m tasting a single cask release (bourbon cask #16366) from Tomatin. This is a hand-filled bottle, distillery exclusive. It was distilled on 1990-09-24, and bottled on 2019-01-23.

I know it might have limited interest for you guys to hear what I think of a bottling like this, as it is very hard to get your hands on. However, I rather see this as something that might pique your interest in actually going to Scotland (or somewhere else exciting) and visiting a distillery or more. You might then suddenly find yourself in a position to buy a unique bottle like this.

Nose: This is old, subtle and sublime. Green apples, light spices and mild caramel. Hints of leather and barbecued pineapple.

Taste: Very rich and full-bodied. This is a dram on fire! Yowzah! Very lively for its age. White pepper, black pepper, Szechuan pepper, and various chilies (the milder ones, mind you). Do not fret. It is highly drinkable. Behind the spice wave I find intense ginger, vanilla and concentrated tropical fruit juices.

Finish: Long finish! The spices have curled up and are sleeping in a corner by now. The sweetness is taking over. Lots of citrus now - all manner of oranges - the sweet kind. Hints of orange zest as well towards the end, and chocolate.

Comment: Wow! This is a very lively dram, and that is meant as a massive compliment.

Score 92/100
