Tobermory 20 YO Spanish Sherry Cask Finish - Distillery Exclusive
Tobermory 20 YO Spanish Sherry Cask Finish - Distillery Exclusive, 56,1 %
At Tobermory Distillery you can currently taste, and of course buy, a distillery exclusive bottle. This is the Tobermory 20 YO Spanish Sherry Cask Finish. We were told this is a single cask release, although it does not say so on the label. It was released just recently, and the distillery has not yet added it to their website. They still list the previous distillery exclusive, which was a 19 YO.
The Tobermory 20 YO Spanish Sherry Cask Finish has apparently spent almost half it's life in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask. I believe the price for this bottle was about GBP 90 in the distillery shop. I do not remember the exact price, as I always throw away the receipt when I've bought whisky. I would rather concentrate on the lovely spirit than ponder it's price tag.
Nose (23/25): Deep and rich sherry notes. I can immediately tell that this will be a dessert whisky. Ripe plums and apricots, raisins. It is super soft and quite sweet. There's the faintest hint of rubber, but it does not detract anything from the experience.
Taste (22/25): Rich and full bodied. The sherry notes are very prominent still, although a bit more sugary now. Lots of fruit. Ginger flavored honey.
Finish (22/25): Very long finish. Warm, fruity and sugary. Some white pepper adds a mild spiciness.
Balance (22/25): A great dram! A very pleasant surprise, I must say. I have not tried many whiskies from this distillery, but this was an eye opener.
