Glengoyne 1987 26 YO Cask #384
Glengoyne 1987 26 YO Cask #384, 54,6 %
During my recent visit to Glengoyne Distillery I had the opportunity to sample a few of their new releases. One particularly great dram was this Glengoyne 1987 26 YO Cask #384. This is a Distillery Exclusive, which is also available to buy online from the distillery at GBP 350.
The whisky was distilled 1987-05-18, matured in a 1st fill European oak sherry butt (cask #384), then bottled in December 2013. The total outturn was 384 bottles. The cask held Oloroso sherry for three full years before it was filled with Glengoyne new make back in 1987.
On November 7, 2013, Glengoyne arranged the Glengoyne Family Live event, streaming live online. Three different casks were tasted by a panel online, and the fans viewing the event voted for the one they believed the most in. They were then given the opportunity to pre-order the whisky before it was made generally available.
Nose (24/25): Fruity, light and delicate. Beautiful, soft sherry notes. Mild oak spices, almonds, vanilla and peaches. After a while I pick up raisins and apricots as well, sort of reminds me of a grand old rum. It is super smooth! There is something slightly warm with a soft edge to it here, and I opt to describe it as mustard seeds. Close to the perfect nose.
Taste (23/25): Rich and complex, to match the nose. Creamy, full bodied, soft vanilla and sherry notes. Mild fruits, and mild caramel.
Finish (22/25): Oily, creamy, rich and long. Continues as it started, which is very appealing, by all means. If I am to be a little critical here, the only thing I miss here is a bit more development on the finish. I know, I do demand a lot!
Balance (23/25): A fantastic dram! The price is too steep for me though, I could not afford bringing a bottle of this back home. Great to have had the chance to try it though.
