Octomore 8.2
Octomore 8.2, 8 YO, 58.4 %
This was a Travel Retail exclusive, released for sale back in 2017,. The Octomore 8.2 is a vintage 2008 whisky, bottled 2017-10-31. The peat level is 167 ppm, and it has been matured in European oak which has previously held Mourvedre, Sauternes, and Austrian sweet wine. A total of 36000 bottles were released.
Here are the details on the casks used (from the official product page):
“All of the opulent spirit in Octomore 08.2 spent the first six years of its life in one of three different styles of wine cask. French Mourvedre – a red wine grape that has a reputation for producing intense red fruit, and strong, earthy, even gamey flavours. Austrian sweet wines – full bodied and charming with an ability to challenge convention with innovative techniques. French Sauternes – casks from the Graves section in Bordeaux that previously held some of the most revered and exclusive dessert wines the world has ever seen.”
Nose: Surprisingly it does not come across as all that über-peated. It is light, fresh and fruity. With time not so light, but still very fruity - more wine-like now.
Taste: Creamy and full bodied. Mouth-coating and then some. This is dram is BIG - in a very good way. Fruity, rich, earthy, and vaguely meaty.
Finish: Long finish. Remains very rich and flavourful all the way. Love the balance if mild spices, fruitiness, meatiness and peatiness on the finish.
Comment: Tongue-numbing and euphoria-inducing.
