Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt

This is the entry level whisky to the Nikka Taketsuru Series of blended malts. The Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt is a non age statement whisky, made up from pot still distilled malt whisky from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. It contains both heavily and medium peated Yoichi, peated Miyagikyo as well as unpeated whisky from both distilleries. A mix of sherry and bourbon casks have been used.

Nose: Notes of dry oak and caramel. A light fruitiness as well as a fair bit of wood smoke. I also detect a small hint of alcohol bite here. In general this is a very shy and closed nose.

Taste: Medium body and quite sweet in character. Chocolate rolled in soot and a sprinkling of peppery ashes. Some caramel and orchard fruits.

Finish: Medium long finish. Caramel and soft sherry notes. Ashes in rosewater.

Comments: A robust blended malt that does not really reach the heights of the age statement whiskies in the same series.
