News from Det Norske Brenneri (The Norwegian Distillery)

We are very happy to announce several pieces of great news from Det Norske Brenneri (The Norwegian Distillery). This company was previously called Agder Brenneri, and was the distillery that launched the first ever Norwegian single malt back in 2012. Den Norske Brenneri - fat

Since then they have new owners, and the duo that pull the strings now are Stig Bareksten and Odd Johan Nelvik. These ambitious guys want to build a Norwegian whisky legacy. Having launched the first Norwegian single malt is a great start, but it takes more, and they know it.

We attended a great tasting with these guys just before the Bergen International Whisky & Beer Festival 2015, and they could share the following news with us:

  • In September 2015 they will launch a new whisky, Eiktyrne. Matured for three years in a Oloroso sherry butt, and finished in an Oloroso blood tub (40 liter) for six months. A full review will be posted in a few days here on Whisky Saga.
  • Audny will be back shortly as Det Norske Brenneri will re-launch it with series 3 in May this year. The re-launch also means new design, new bottle and 50 cl rather than 35 cl.
  • Det Norske Brenneri plan to release 1-2 whiskies per year going forward.
  • Their annual whisky production will increase to about 20 000 lpa (liter pure alcohol) this year.
  • They have about 12 000 liters maturing in their warehouse right now.
  • So far they have used almost exclusively sherry casks, but they will start using more virgin oak from now on, and they will experiment more with smaller casks.

More exciting news from Det Norske Brenneri, news on Norwegian whisky and news on Nordic whisky coming soon. Watch this space!
