Macaloney’s Peated Mac Na Braiche Single Malt Spirit
Macaloney’s Peated Mac Na Braiche Single Malt Spirit, NAS, 46 %
“This is the first single malt outside of Islay to use Canadian barley peat-smoked to 54 ppm at the distillery in a proprietary soaker-smoker. Whiskymaker Dr. Graeme Macaloney studied the traditional peat-smoking process in Islay, recreating it here on Vancouver Island. Matured in Portuguese red wine barriques.”
The Macaloney’s Peated Mac Na Braiche Single Malt Spirit was available from the distillery at CAN $ 95 but is now sold out.
Nose: Dirty strawberries and beef jerky set an intriguing tone, with red berries and soot adding complexity. Woodfires in the distance create a warm backdrop, with mild maltiness, worn leather, and earthy cinnamon emerging over time.
Taste: Medium to full-bodied, dry-ish in character. Flavors of white pepper, soot, and chocolate ashes dominate, with a pinch of salt enhancing the profile.
Finish: Medium-long, maintaining a fine balance between wood fire smoke, soot, cinnamon, nuts, dried fruits, and chocolate.
Comment: Canadian peat is more than OK in my book!
