Here is the fourth installment in the new Macallan Master Series range. I have previously reviewed the Rare Cask, No. 6 and Reflexion.

During the launch of this whisky we were told that the oldest whisky included here is from 1940. Back then Macallan could not get hold of enough coal, and had to use some peat in their production. This is not to be considered a peaty whisky by any means, but one might possibly detect vague hints of something slightly smoky. Not sure how much of the 1940 vintage is in here, so it might be a long shot. Still a fun fact.

I actually got to try the 3rd batch of the Macallan M. There is supposedly slight differences in ABV between the batches. This one came it at 44 % ABV. This whisky has been matured exclusively in ex-sherry butts and puncheons, mostly built of Spanish oak.

The five bottles that were allocated to the Norwegian market have all been sold (the price was around NOK 32 000 for the Horeca market segment). You can still order this exclusive Lalique crystal decanter online in the UK at GBP 2780!

Nose (23/25): Light and sugary. Soft caramel, with hints of something slightly citrusy. Well-balanced and delicate. Caramel and vanilla ice-cream. With time I also find red berries, hints of oak, Christmas cake and oranges.

Taste (22/25): Spicy and almost punchy. Rich and complex. Full mouthfeel. Caramel, ginger, orange zest, and dried fruits.

Finish (23/25): Oily and rich. Honey and caramel syrup. Rich and warm sherry notes. A slightly bitter orange note towards the end. Long and lingering finish.

Balance (23/25): Delightful! It's like a long and warm embrace. Shame about the price though, although I guess this proves that sometimes these ultra expensive bottles also do contain very, very good whisky. It is certainly not just about the packaging for the Macallan M.
