Chichibu 2010 5 YO Cask #745 (Blackadder)
Chichibu 2010 5 YO Cask #745, 61,4 %
Here is a special treat. A single cask whisky from Japanese distillery Chichibu, released by independent bottler Blackadder. The Chichibu 2010 5 YO Cask #745 has been fully matured in an ex Cognac cask (cask #745). It was distilled on 2010-03-25, bottled in April 2015 and the total outturn was 289 bottles.
I have not had many whiskies matured in Cognac casks, but this might change over time. With the shortage of 'standard casks' like ex-bourbon and ex-sherry, more distilleries will have to look elsewhere. It is then impossible to avoid looking to France, where they have very long traditions with making high quality oak casks for the Cognac industry. See also my recent article on Det Norske Brenneri, a small Norwegian distillery that is investing in exclusive French casks that have previously held cognac and wine.
You can possibly find a bottle or two online still at € 500+. This was a release exclusive to the Japanese market. Robin Tucek, Mr Blackadder himself, has a good relationship with Mr Chichibu - Ichiro Akuto. On the bottle label you will see the text "Exclusive bottling under the supervision of Ichiro-san for Blackadder International Ltd".
Nose: Rich and deep wine notes are the first to reach my nose. The sweetness is so - tangible. This really works a charm. There is a mild oakiness here, working as a spice, if you will. I also find ginger and light summer fruits.
Taste: Again very rich and full character. The sweetness is now a bit more sugary, a bit lighter. Lots of apple notes, mixed with white pepper, eucalyptus and honey. Lovely tropical notes come through on subsequent sips - pineapple and honey melon.
Finish: Mouthwatering and long finish. The sweetness now turns darker, resembling more the sweetness I found on the nose. Caramel and cinnamon baked apples drizzled with warm honey. Rich, rich, rich! Ooh, nice nuttiness right at the end.
Comments: Very balanced and rich whisky! Quite a marvel considering the young age. This is a dram that keeps growing. I might have to travel to japan to get a bottle myself next time there is a similar release!
