...and with this I believe I have reviewed all the Diageo Special Releases for 2016, except for the Port Ellen. That one was simply out of my price range, even for a sample. This Auchroisk 1990 25 YO (Special Release 2016) marks the third time Auchroisk is included in the annual Diageo Special Releases. Previously we have seen a 20 YO in 2010 and a 30 YO in 2012.
This release has been matured in a combination of American oak hogheads and refill European oak butts. The total outturn was limited to 3954 bottles.
The Auchroisk 1990 25 YO (Special Release 2016) just recently sold out in Norway at NOK 2400 (6391301), but you can still buy it in the UK at around GBP 280.
Nose: Fresh and light. Grapes and a touch of raisins. Vanilla, canned fruit dessert, and some oakiness. Earthy with light vegetal notes after a few minutes.
Taste: Oily and full bodied mouthfeel. Honey, caramel and vanilla. Medium spiciness - white pepper, nutmeg and ginger.
Finish: Medium long finish. A touch oaky. The honey like sweetness lingers.
Comments: Solid and well-balanced, but not quite up there with the best.
