Vardberg Born Cask Strength
Vardberg Born Cask Strength, 3 YO, 60 %
The first ever single malt released by Norwegian distillery Berentsens Brygghus. Their single malt brand is Vardberg. This initial release will come in two variants, this 60 % ABV variant, and another bottled with an ABV of 48 % to be released on April 5. A separate review of the 48 % ABV variant will be published later.
This whisky has been matured in five casks; 3 1st fill ex-bourbon casks and 2 old 1st fill ex-Oloroso Sherry butts.
This whisky goes on sale in Norway this coming week at NOK 1699 (15433302).
Nose: Sweeter than the 48 % ABV variant. More nutty - again almond milk. Milk chocolate as well. Malty and rich on the one hand, and light and fruity on the other. With time creamy vanilla and soft peppery notes. No bitterness and the barest hint of rubber tires. Strawberry and vanilla milkshake follows.
Taste: Full bodied and surprisingly smooth for this age and ABV. Rich, sweet and fruity. Tropical fruits - including barbecued pineapple and fresh blood orange. Softly floral honey.
Finish: Medium to short finish. Rather dry on the finish. Black and white pepper, earthy cinnamon. Ginger flavored honey and medium dark chocolate. Hint of peppermint in the end,
Comment: Delicate nose, a bear hug of a palate, and a dry finish. I am charmed, for sure.
