Teeling 15 YO Whiskey Explorers Edition 15 YO Mugi Shochu (Japanese Edition)
Teeling 15 YO Whiskey Explorers Edition 15 YO Mugi Shochu (Japanese Edition), 46%
Oh, my! What a long title. We are definitely in Meatloaf (the artist, not the dubious dish) territory here. This blended whisky from Teeling has been matured in ex-bourbon casks, and then finished in ex-Mugi Shochu casks from Japan.
Now shochu can be made using a wide variety of raw material, but as Mugi is Japanese for barley I think it is safe to assume this shochu was indeed barley based.
Not available in Norway, but you can pick up a bottle online at around € 110.
Nose: Starts cool and mild, with an initial bouquet of vanilla, white pepper, and butterscotch. As it develops, it introduces orchard fruits and a touch of nuttiness.
Taste: Medium-bodied, featuring white pepper and a gentle caramel sauce at the outset. This evolves into a medley of fresh and dried fruits, accompanied by a variety of spices, with a slightly dry and oaky character.
Finish: Medium-long and becoming drier, yet maintaining a consistent spiciness and fruitiness throughout.
Comment: Quite appealing.
