Stratheden Classic Selection - The Lost Distillery
Stratheden Classic Selection, NAS, 43 %
Here it is then, the sixth and final release in The Lost Distillery Company's new entry level range, the Classic Selection.
Stratheden is the Lowland whisky from the company. It was located in Auchtermuchty (love that name!), was opened for production in 1829 and closed down in 1926.
We have previously reviewed the older expressions in the range (Archivists Collection (Deluxe) and Vintage Collection).
Nose (21/25): Vanilla, stewed apples, and pineapple (minus the pineapple sweetness - if that makes any sense). Rather shy nose. Dusty piles of old papers. A hint of lime zest adds some freshness after a few minutes.
Taste (22/25): Very spicy delivery - wow! Full-bodied and fun. Pepper and salt, ginger and a hint of mint. Very oily mouth-feel.
Finish (21/25): Medium long and quite warm. Vanilla and mild fruits - old school hard candy with natural fruit flavors. Apples and oranges. Right at the end there is a maritime streak with a puff of smoke and a pinch of ashes.
Balance (21/25): Tempered fruitiness and great body for such an entry level whisky. This is a great everyday dram.
Score (85/100)
