Port Charlotte 2012 SC:01

Port Charlotte 2012 SC:01, 9 YO, 55.2 %

This is the fifth and newest addition to the Cask Exploration Series from Bruichladdich and their brand of heavily peated single malt whisky, Port Charlotte. It was made using 100 % Islay grown barley, of the Concerto, Propino, Publican and Oxbridge varieties. The maturation profile is a bit of a mouthful so I’ll just quote the official product page:

“Parcel one: Sherry butts re-casked into first fill Sauternes casks; Parcel two: Second fill American whiskey barrels re-casked into second-fill Sauternes casks; Parcel three: A combination of first and second fill American whiskey barrels re-casked into first fill Sauternes casks. “

The Port Charlotte 2012 SC:01 is available in Norway at NOK 1500 (14685601).

Nose: Sweet and smoky milk chocolate. Rich wood smoke with hints of barbecued meat. Rich and earthy vanilla. Hints of toasted oak.

Taste: Full bodied. Somewhat dry and dark in character at first. Heaps of wood smoke and earthy peat. Chocolate and creamy vanilla.

Finish: Medium long finish. A lighter fruitiness now. Sweet and juicy mixed in with the rich and earthy smokiness.

Comment: This is so enjoyable!

Score 88/100
