Port Charlotte 10 Second Limited Edition (2016)
Port Charlotte 10 Second Limited Edition (2016), 10 YO, 50 %
Back in 2012 we saw the release of the Port Charlotte PC10 from Bruichladdich Distillery. At that time it was the first 10 YO Port Charlotte release. In 2016 this follow-up was released, the Port Charlotte 10 Second Limited Edition.
This whisky has been matured in a mix of 1st fill bourbon barrels, sherry casks, tempranillo casks, and French wine casks. It is, as walways with Port Charlotte, a heavily peated dram at 40 ppm phenols. It was bottled on 2016-10-19 in a limited run of 18 000 bottles.
You can get your bottle of the Port Charlotte 10 Second Limited Edition (2016) in Norway at NOK 909 (7337201). From what I can see it is not available in Sweden, and it is more or less sold out in the UK.
Nose: Chocolate wood smoke, literally a chocolate wood set on fire! Hmm.. make that salty chocolate. Vanilla, light citrus notes. The barest hint of the floral Bruichladdich character. A very nice nose. Despite the heavy peat and the high ABV you can safely bury your nose in the glass. Again and again...
Taste: Rich and full-bodied. Hot embers and ashes, sprinkled with chili fruits which are also now smokin' hot.
Finish: Medium to long finish. Caramel, vanilla, chocolate and malt. The smoke now has a green-ish, grassy side to it. It feels less sweet. Lingering warmth - a delightful after burn.
Comments: A dram that packs a punch! You do not have to go to the extremes of Octomore to get a full on heavily peated treat from Bruichladdich.
