Port Askaig 45 YO
Port Askaig 45 YO, 40.8 %
This is something very special indeed. Port Askaig is a brand from independent bottler Elixir Distillers. They do not disclose the distillery where these single malts are produced, and it may vary from product to product. In this particular case we have a 45 year old Bunnahabhain hiding behind the Port Askaig name.
This whisky started off as five refill sherry butts filled back in 1968. I am told these were sister casks of the rather well known Auld Aquaintance bottling that was released back in 2002.
The 5 refill sherry butts were married together for the final year in 3 full sherry butts, The whisky was finally bottled at natural cask strength. This is an unpeated Port Askaig, which is unusual, and it was made using mainland malt back in 1968.
You can buy the Port Askaig 45 YO in Norway at NOK 19890 (13703101) and online from The Whisky Exchange at GBP 2000.
Nose: Camphor and menthol indicate straight off that this is an old whisky. Malt, oak and a surprisingly rich fruitiness is the next to greet my nose. Tropical fruits as well as ripe apples and pears, Brilliant sweetness. Super complex. Green notes and a light saltiness with time.
Taste: Full bodied and creamy mouthfeel. Sugary and fruity, combined with delicate green notes. Soft spiciness and again a pinch of salt.
Finish: Long, long finish. Light fruitiness all the way. Creamy and soft oakiness. Cut grass, mint and basil towards the end.
Comment: Magical potion transporting me back to Bunnahabhain Bay.
Score: 93/100
