Oban 21 YO (Special Release 2013)
Oban 21 YO (Special Release 2013), 58,5 %
It is very rare to see new releases from the Highland distillery Oban. There are very, very few independent bottlings from this distillery as well. We did, however, get a special treat in Diageo's Special Release 2013 series, when they presented the Oban 21 YO.
This is a cask strength release, limited to 2860 bottles. It has been matured in rejuvenated American oak and 2nd fill ex-bodega casks.
The Oban 21 YO (Special release 2013) was available to buy in Norway at the very reasonable price of NOK 1499, but it is now sold out both here and everywhere else. Auctions are now your only possible source.
Nose (23/25): Soft and delicate. Caramel, honey, banana, and light sherry notes. Slightly salty. I can imagine the Oban Bay on a sunny day, with a mild breeze coming off the sea.
Taste (22/25): Caramel, vanilla, tropical fruits, banana, salt, and a pinch of white pepper. There is a slight burnt edge to it right at the start, but then it mellows out and all is forgiven.
Finish (23/25): Oily, nutty and a bit oaky. Tropical fruits, and mild spiciness. Honey and caramel swirls, mixed with creamy vanilla ice cream. Long, warm and tender finish. What a great hug of a dram!
Balance (23/25): A real treat! I'll stop writing now, and rather go back to enjoying what's left in my glass.
Score (91/100)
