Here is the third installment in the unpeated whiskies from Danish distillery Stauning. I have prviously reviewed the 1st and 2nd edition - and here we have Stauning Traditional 3rd Edition.

This whisky was distilled in 2009/2010, and bottled in 2014. It has been matured in 200 l 1st fill ex-bourbon casks. The outturn was limited to around 950 bottles. Stauning Traditional 3rd Edition was released for sale on May 2, 2014.

This whisky is now sold out, but was priced at DKK 695 when it was released. You might find a bottle at auction at just below EUR 100.

Nose (20/25): Shy nose. Light maltiness. The oakiness is relatively pronounced - wet planks, sawmill, sawdust. A bit spicy and herbal. I am fairly sure I can detect notes of Tiger Balm here - how very odd and intriguing.

Taste (18/25): Soft and dry-ish mouthfeel. Very spicy - lots of pepper, chili and raw ginger. Chewy and rich.

Finish (21/25): The spices are still very much present, but a bit mellowed out now. A deep sweetness comes sneaking in, rich caramel and honey, adding a needed extra dimension. Medium long and warm finish. It really does pick up very nicely towards the end.

Balance (20/25): Now we're talking. There is a very nice, and positive development through the three first expressions I have now reviewed in this series from Stauning. This can only bode well for the future.
