Nose (20/25): Milk chocolate, banana, citrus, apples, red berries and a bit of oak. It does have a slight sting of alcohol, letting us know this is still a quite young whisky. Given some time in the glass I detect mild sherry notes, cardamom and malt.
Taste (20/25): Peppery attack. A bit aggressive, as they also say on the back label on the bottle. The mouthfeel is rich, and slightly oily. White pepper morphing into black pepper faster than you can say pepper-morphing-whisky. There is more than just pepper here, of course; it is fruity with apples and pears.
Finish (19/25): Vanilla, mild caramel, honey, and canned pears. The finish is warm-ish and relatively short. It has a metallic and woody touch right at the end.
Balance (19/25): A decent dram, but I was hoping for a bit more really. This was not the step up from Series 1 and 2, that I was expecting. It is also nowhere near as good as their Eiktyrne, a whisky that has had a finish in small blood tub casks (40 liter). I believe the right way to go for Det Norske Brenneri is to use more small casks in the mix, while thjeir whisky is still so young.
