Nordic Whisky #36 - Audny Series 2 Single Cask
Audny Series 2 Single Cask, 3 YO, 46 %
This is the second release of the first Norwegian single malt whisky. We have previously reviewed Series 1. This whisky was released by Agder Brenneri, but since then the distillery has changed name to Det Norske Brenneri.
Audny Series 2 Single Cask was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2012. It was matured for the full length in a first fill sherry butt (cask #36). The outturn was 1750 bottles at 35 cl each.
There are still a few bottles available to buy in Norway at NOK 495 (item number 201302).
In May 2015 Det Norske Brenneri will launch Audny Series 3 (see here for more details).
Nose (21/25): Chocolate, dried fruits, apples, and licorice. Round and pleasant. I did find the nose on Series 1 to be slightly better, but it is a very close call.
Taste (21/25): Full and sweet. Caramel, licorice, white pepper, apples, and some dried fruits. A notch up from Series 1. This feels slightly more mature.
Finish (19/25): Pepper and caramel. Not much more really. It is clearly a young whisky, and the finish is relatively short.
Balance (20/25): A young whisky that shows promise, much like Series 1 really. I would strongly recommend you try the upcoming new release from Det Norske Brenneri, Eiktyrne, which is a much more mature and balanced product.
