Nordic whisky #195 - Eiktyrne Rin og Rennande

It is still a rare occasion to have a new Norwegian whisky released to the market. All the more important for me to make sure I do a review. In this case it is the latest release from Det Norske Brenneri, the Eiktyrne Rin og Rennande.

This whisky has initially been matured in a mix of American virgin oak and fresh French brandy casks. Then it was finished in a fresh Pineau des Charentes cask. The total output was 655 bottles.

You can still buy the Eiktyrne Rin og Rennande in Norway at NOK 629,90 (8314002).

Nose: Soft and very approachable. Little fluffy clouds of cinnamon sticks, vanilla, sweet licorice, icing sugar, grapes, plums and .. tropical fruits .. possibly pineapple with a slice of grapefruit.

Taste: Full-bodied, with a rich and oily mouthfeel. Big and bold on the initial attack - or should I say embrace. It certainly is warm and positive. Lots of spices and apples, with hints of grapes. The licorice is still here, but less sweet now. The cinnamon sticks are dust dry.

Finish: Medium long finish. A bit drier now. Very dark chocolate and cinnamon sticks ground to a fine dust. A touch of oak and leather, with a vague bitterness in the back.

Comments: A very solid 3 YO again from Det Norske Brenneri. I did like the previous release in the series a little better (see Eiktyrne Sokin og Eikin).

Score (86/100)
