Nordic whisky #191 - Grythyttan Vätte, 5 YO, 59.5 %

Nordic whisky #191 - Grythyttan VätteThis is an independent bottling by Bergslagens, the spirit was distilled in 2011 at the now closed Grythyttan Distillery in Sweden. The Grythyttan Vätte has been matured in a both 200 litre ex-bourbon casks and 50 litre ex-sherry casks. The total outturn was a mere 850 bottles.

The Swedish name "vätte" translates more or less to "wight" in English. This was originally a word used to describe a living (human) being, but over time it changed to refer to a supernatural being.

The Grythyttan Vätte was launched on 2017-10-02, and you can still buy this whisky in Sweden at SEK 995 (3191902).

Nose: Quite shy on first approach. Hints of smoke in the back. Mild and sweet - the sherry casks make the most of themselves. The faint memory of something rubbery in the back. With time it opens up and there is added red berries and honey, it does improve significantly.

Taste: Rich and full-bodied. Quite spicy - chili and black pepper. Even more sherry influence now, and there is definitely an element of bicycle repair set and rubber hose. Not quite sulphury, but not all that far away.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Dies off rather quickly. Tons of sweet licorice, sweet and fresh oak, mint and cough medicine. A bit raw in the end.

Comments: Comes across as quite young and rough on the edges. I've had better from Grythyttan.

Score (79/100)
