Nordic Whisky #138 - Mackmyra Moment Tolv (21)
Mackmyra Moment Tolv, 12 YO, 47 %
The Mackmyra Moment Tolv ("tolv" is twelve in Swedish) is the first ever 12 year old Nordic single malt whisky, as far as I know. That is quite an achievement. This is also the 21st release in the Mackmyra Moment Series.
A mix of 1st fill bourbon casks and Oloroso soaked white oak casks have been used to produce this whisky. The Mackmyra Moment Tolv was distilled in 2004, and bottled in 2016. The total outturn was 1490 bottles.
This whisky came on sale in Sweden on 2017-02-16, at SEK 1195. It is now sold out.
Nose: Soft notes of fresh oak - I'm thinking sawmill, sawdust, newly cut oak planks. I also find vanilla, mint, more than a few hints of perfume and something oddly medicinal. It appears young-ish on the nose, and there is a noticeable alcohol bite here. With time the bite dissipates and the vanilla notes take on a soft fruity character. In other words, it improves significantly over time.
Taste: Sharpish mouthfeel, and medium body. The alcohol bite is present here as well. A touch spicy - white pepper, cinnamon, and ginger. Vanilla, fresh pears and mild caramel.
Finish: Medium long finish. A bit watery in character towards the end. Still a bit raw on the edges as well. Caramel, sweet licorice and ripe pears.
Comments: I was really hoping for something more here. The first 12 YO Nordic whisky should appear more mature and well-balanced than this. It feels a bit like a wasted opportunity.
