The latest release from Myken Destilleri, Norway, is a vatting of five casks. Two 200 litre ex-Sauternes casks (one peated and one unpeated), one 200 litre ex-bourbon cask (peated), and two Hungarian oak casks (peated). The calculated phenol level in the malt is 23 ppm for this product.

Nose: Weird spices at first; Hello, Hungarian oak! Dunnage warehouse sweetness and herbs; Hello, Sauternes casks! Creamy vanilla and hints of tropical fruits; Hello, ex-bourbon casks! Luckily (well, surely more the skills of Roar Larsen than luck) this international band of brothers casks do work very well together. It’s not a hit-you-over-the-head peat bomb. This is more refined, and has more going for it. The tempered sweetness as well as the herbs and also - with time - green notes of tomato plant make a coherent and appealing whole.

Taste: Medium to light body. Hmm..the brothers are not fully in sync here. Now I find that it is mainly the dry peaty notes that play with the green notes of tomato plant and cut grass. White pepper, earthy cinnamon and cardamom. It is quite dry now.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Remains very dry till the end. More spices towards the end; white pepper, black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom. Even hints of dried aniseed and salt in the end.

Comment: A very dry whisky from a very wet place 😉
