Nordic whisky #258 - Myken Bådin Stout Intervention 2020

Myken Bådin Stout Intervention 2020, 4.5 YO, 57.2 %

This is exciting. The first ever Norwegian single malt finished in beer casks. The Myken Bådin Stout Intervention 2020 was initially matured in bourbon barrels, then finished for a full year in casks that had first held Myken single malt, then were shipped off to local brewery Bådin Bryggeri who used them to mature their stout, then the casks were shipped back to Myken! Phew!

The Myken Bådin Stout Intervention 2020 will be available to buy starting Friday November 6 at NOK 899 (12263402).

Nose: Cool, fruity and fresh at first. Then the mood switches and I get earthy notes of creamy coffee and dark chocolate. It is pleasant on the nose, even if there is a vague hint of alcohol in the background. With time notes of Tiger Balm and green grass. Turning greener by the minute actually - and that works. More time passes and suddenly we enter a third phase where it all just clicks into place. The coffee notes from the stout are now perfectly balanced with the rich, malty and fruity notes of the Myken spirit.

Taste: Full bodied and raw-ish (not to be mistaken for raw fish!). Feels almost peaty at first. Malty, dry, dark, earthy. It comes with a temperament, this one. Chocolate with bits of dried, sweet ginger, dried chili and dried pineapple. Quite unsweet nevertheless. Tomato plant and other vegetal notes.

Finish: Short to medium long finish. Drier still. White pepper, black pepper, grey pepper (?). Raw ginger. Green mint and cold coffee in the end.

Comment: A moody and charming adolescent with an attitude. Myken emo!

Score 85/100
