Mortlach 1992 21 YO Directors' Cut
Mortlach 1992 21 YO Directors' Cut, 56,7 %
Mortlach make really good whisky, and it used to be rather hard to get - mainly Independent Bottlers provided us with what little we could find. The production was mainly used in Diageo's many blends. This is now changing. Diageo is pushing a whole range of premium priced Mortlach single malts now. The aim is obviously to brand this as a luxury brand, like Macallan and Dalmore (to name a couple of examples). My guess is therefore that we will very soon see a marked price increase also for Mortlach from independent bottlers.
But let us enjoy the relatively manageable prices for the current crop of IB releases, like this Mortlach 1992 21 YO Directors' Cut from Douglas Laing. The whisky was distilled in September 1992, and bottled December 2012. The sherry butt (cask# 10143) yielded 255 bottles.
This whisky is available in Norway at NOK 2495 (item number 1723501), and Sweden as SEK 2090 (item number 85493).
Nose (23/25): Oh yeah! Let's just skip dinner, it is time for dessert! Rum cake, dark fruits, toffee, demerara sgar, mild spices and chocolate. What's not to like here?
Taste (23/25): More fruity on the palate than on the nose. Berries, raisins, rum cake (again), delightful sherry notes.
Finish (22/25): Toffee, honey, mild spices and some herbal notes. Warm and oily. Long and lingering.
Balance (22/25): This is how a real sherry matured whisky should be. Happy to have tried it!
