MHOBA Bushfire

MHOBA Bushfire, ~2 YO, 55 %

MHOBA-bushfire.jpg

This is a South-African rum made from 100 % fermented sugarcane juice and not molasses. It is pot still distilled at MHOBA Rum Distillery, South Africa.

The organic sugarcanes are grown, fermented and distilled on the MHOBA estate. They use a mix of baking yeast and wild yeast from the sugarcanes for the fermentation. After distilling the spirit is filled in demi-johns with staves of burnt Sickle bush wood. The Sickle bush is also typically used for Braai (South-African barbecue).

The MHOBA Bushfire goes on sale in Norway on May 31 at NOK 999 (13173901).

Nose: Very unusual nose. Never had anything like it. It’s weird and fun! It’s like burnt wood, burnt cucumber and tomato plant with some strange spices added to it. Also vanilla.

Taste: Medium to full bodied. Added spices now - burnt pepper in particular. Soft smoky notes. Other than that it matches the nose well. Relatively dry at first.

Finish: Medium long finish. Not as dry now, and it is sweeter. Sugar sweet. Peppery chewing gum rolled in ashes.

Comment: Great fun!
