Nordic Whisky #166 - Mackmyra Rotspon Triple Wood
Mackmyra Rotspon Triple Wood, 4 YO, 55,4 %
Mackmyra Rotspon Triple Wood is an unpeated whisky from Mackmyra. It was initially matured for four years in 200 litre American oak casks, then transferred into 30 litre Gravity casks (a Mackmyra speciality made from American and Swedish oak) for six months. Finally it was given a finish in Rotspon casks for an unspecified amount of time.
Rotspon casks are oak casks used in old German Hanseatic (Hansa) cities to mature imported French wine (in this case Bordeaux wine).
The total outturn in this case was 438 bottles at 50 cl each.
Nose: Earthy and fresh is what strikes me first. Red berries and wet leaves on a dirt path in the woods. Then we're transported to a bakery filled with the sweet smell of pastries. Vanilla, cream, icing sugar and general sweetness. Well integrated. No alcohol bite.
Taste: Rich and full mouthfeel. Red berries and black pepper at first, then the vanilla arrives. Behind it all there's dry oaky notes.
Finish: Medium long finish. No longer particularly dry. Does not really develop any further, but remains pleasant enough - sweet and a bit simple.
Comments: I can certainly enjoy this on a lazy afternoon.
