Nordic whisky #193 - Mackmyra Moment Prestige (24)
Mackmyra Moment Prestige (24), 11 YO, 46.1 %
Let me present to you the best Mackmyra I have had so far. The Mackmyra Moment Prestige is the best of the 61 Mackmyra whiskies I have reviewed so far. But let's get back to the facts for a moment. Here is the official blurb on the Mackmyra Moment Prestige, the 24th installment in the Moment Series:
"Moment Prestige is an eleven year old whisky aged on casks of French oak that previously held wine from the artisan Champagne producer Philipponnat.
The youngest part of the whisky has been aged between the years 2006 – 2017, and the oldest part, which makes up 40% of the total volume, was aged between the years 2004 – 2017."
These are the main cask types used in the maturation:
- 1st fill ex-Champagne, 225 litres
- 2nd fill ex-Champagne, 250 litres
- 3rd fill ex-Champagne, 250 litres
The Mackmyra Moment Prestige was released on 2017-12-06 in a limited run of 4111 bottles. It is still avaiulable in Sweden at SEK 1198 (8288801).
Nose: Lots of honey. There's two distinct types of honey though - a warm, massive, heather-like honey as a base, and then a floral, light and fluffy one on top. Behind the honey there are various spices (white pepper, cardamom and cinnamon), and a mild fruitiness (orchard fruits and hints of citrus). With time grapes and a vague earthiness - think damp earth.
Taste: Medium body and super soft mouthfeel. I know it is a cliche, but this really appears as much softer than your average whisky. Lots of pepper and a touch of oak. There is actually a distinct note of grapes here. Not sure I would call it a taste of champagne, but I imagine it is as close as you'll ever get to having a whisky taste like champagne.
Finish: Medium to long finish. Vanilla and grapes. The spices are gone. Increasing oakiness towards the end.
Comments: This was a very positive experience. The nose is fabulous, the palate is very good. One of the very best Mackmyra expressions I have tried, and I have tried a lot!
