Macallan No. 6
Macallan No. 6, ~20 YO, 43 %
The Macallan Distillery recently released their new The Macallan 1824 Masters Series. The range consists of four whiskies (initially); Rare Cask, Reflexion, No. 6, and M. I have now tasted all four and will bring you reviews over the next few days. The whiskies were tested in a half-blind setup; in other words I knew the whiskies I was tasting, but not the order.
First off we have The Macallan No. 6. I have been told by someone at Macallan that it consists of whisky distilled in 1995, and bottled in 2015. This is what they call a 'single cooperage whisky'. For maturation only 1st fill ex-sherry casks were used, and these were all casks made at the same cooperage, Tevasa (Spain).
The name of this whisky comes from the six pillars of Macallan: The Spiritual Home, The Curiously Small Stills, The Finest Cut, The Exceptional Oak Casks, The Natural Colour, The Peerless Spirit.
The whisky is presented in a very fancy (and very expensive) crystal decanter from Lalique.
You can buy a bottle of The Macallan No. 6 in Norway at NOK 29 995 (2044201), and in Sweden at SEK 29 995 (8502901).
Nose (22/25): Milk chocolate, vanilla ice-cream, and light caramel sauce. It has a soft oakiness. Delicate nuttiness after a few minutes. Dates, apricots, and almonds.
Taste (21/25): Spicy, oaky and dry-ish upfront. Burnt toast with caramel spread. Pepper. The mouthfeel is a bit thin - at least compared to the others in the range.
Finish (22/25): Long finish. Caramel, dark fruits, and pepper. More rich and oily towards the end. Dark chocolate.
Balance (22/25): Solid and well-balanced through and through.
Score (87/100)
