Macallan Double Cask 12 YO
Macallan Double Cask 12 YO, 40 %
Today I take a closer look at one of the core range products from Macallan Distillery. The Macallan Double Cask 12 YO has been matured in a combination of American and European Sherry oak, no use of ex-Bourbon barrels. There is a higher proportion of American oak ex-Sherry casks here than in the Macallan 12 YO Sherry Oak.
You can buy the Macallan Double Cask 12 YO in Norway at NOK 665 (6892501), in Sweden at SEK 469 (49601), and in the UK at around GBP 50.
Nose: Dried fruits, with a fair amount of citrus - lemon to be precise. Also sponge cake and vanilla. Quite mellow in style. Refined and very sniffable.
Taste: Quite light in body. Dried fruits still, but also marmalade made from bitter oranges. Caramel and vanilla.
Finish: Medium long finish. The bitter oranges linger, and morph into more of an oaky bitterness. Towards the end it turns sweeter, with hints of honey. I find it softly spicy; cinnamon and white pepper. Thin and watery in character.
Comments: The nose promises more than the palate can deliver. There are better alternatives from Macallan.
