Long John Special Reserve
Long John Special Reserve, NAS, 40 %
Time has come to try the Long John blended scotch whisky. This is an old product, dating back to 1825. Long John has been produced at the Tormore Distillery since it was opened in 1958. Before that time the production was done at the Ben Nevis distillery.
The brand (and Tormore) is now owned by Pernod Ricard. The blend is said to contain 48 different malts.
Long John is available to buy at Vinmonopolet at NOK 335 (item number 14701), and at Systembolaget at SEK 239 (item number 461).
Nose (20/25): Simple syrup, icing sugar, and vanilla. It has a very sweet, and slightly smoky nose. It also has a distinct malty, almost new-makey character. There are no off-notes here, and it is quite decent.
Taste (19/25): Woody, bourbon notes, smoky, and again quite sweet. The simple syrup and icing sugar is here as well.
Finish (17/25): Appears quite thin, towards watery. The mouth-feel does leave something to be desired.
Balance (19/25): A decent everyday blend. I would probably prefer this one with an ice cube or two, or in a cocktail. Might have to try it again with ice this summer.
Score (75/100)
