Ledaig 16 YO Spanish Sherry Cask Finish - Distillery Exclusive
Ledaig 16 YO Spanish Sherry Cask Finish - Distillery Exclusive, 57,2 %
Today I bring to you another distillery exclusive from Tobermory Distillery. Ledaig is the brand name for the peated whisky from Tobermory. I have, unfairly it turns out, been shunning Ledaig for years. I tried the Ledaig 10 YO early on my 'whisky journey', and did not like it. Well, now I have finally gone back and tried a few Tobermory and Ledaig, and I have made several very positive discoveries. This Ledaig 16 YO Spanish Sherry Cask Finish is one of them.
This expression was only available to buy at the distillery, and was released about a year or so ago. The sherry cask used for the finish previously held Pedro Ximenez sherry.
This expression is now sold out, and a new Ledaig distillery exclusive is expected to be released shortly.
Nose (22/25): Very nice combination of dry, heavy PX sweetness and peat. Lots of chocolate mixed in with the thick, sweet smokiness.
Taste (22/25): Deep sherry, chocolate, and dried fruits smoked over smoldering hot coal. Well rounded and delicate.
Finish (21/25): Rich and sweet, with a long finish. The sherry, chocolate and peat carry on through to the very end. And there is no bitterness, no mineral and no sour notes here!
Balance (22/25): This is a really good peaty whisky from the lovely Isle of Mull. Another lesson learnt for me. Always challenge your own prejudices and biased opinions - in the end none of them are worth keeping!
