Lagavulin 12 YO (Special Release 2016)
Lagavulin 12 YO (Special Release 2016), 57,7 %
Well, what do you know? I have actually tried the latest Lagavulin 12 YO. This is the annual, limited edition, cask strength version of Lagavulin that is released as part of the Diageo Special Releases. So, let's see how the Lagavulin 12 YO (Special Release 2016) compares to the 2014 and 2015 releases.
This fine whisky was matured in refill American oak hogsheads. This is the 16th annual release of the Lagavulin 12 YO.
The Lagavulin 12 YO (Special Release 2016) is already sold out in Norway (NOK 879), but is still available to buy in Sweden at SEK 1002 (4003001).
Nose: Right off it feels both a bit sweeter and bit a more peaty than the 2015 release. Lemon and lime peel. Wood smoke, sea salt and raw bacon. Hints of sweet barbecue sauce.
Taste: Full bodied and a bit raw mouthfeel. This is a rough one, alright. More spicy and more full-on in its peatiness. There's tons of peppery ashes, fiery wood smoke and smoky chili. Lurking behind all this oomph is a rather sweet fruitiness. Citrus and apples. Vanilla, unsalted peanuts and raw bacon. Briny.
Finish: Medium long finish. Even more medicinal now - salt, iodine and a slightly bitter note. Licorice and banana cake. Hints of cough syrup.
Comments: A lovely, classic Lagavulin.
