Kilchoman 2009 5 YO Original Cask Strength
Kilchoman 2009 5 YO Original Cask Strength, 59,2 %
On my very first trip to Islay we had our own tasting with John MacLellan, General Manager at Kilchoman Distillery. My husband has already shared his thoughts on the tasting.
One of the whiskies John MacLellan brought was a Kilchoman Original Cask Strength. This one was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2014, which makes it 5 YO. It was matured in bourbon barrels and this was a limited release of 9200 bottles.
The whisky is available in Norway at NOK 839,90 (item number 1960001) and in Sweden at SEK 981 (item number 85860)
Nose (22/25): Nice smell! Quite typical Kilchoman to me with the smoke, meat sausage and fond. Som vanilla sweetness from the bourbon barrels. Warm and rich on the nose with some pepper.
Taste (23/25): A powerful taste! Smoky and rough. I like it! A warm mouthfeel with salt, meat broth and licorice.
Finish (22/25): Usually I find the Kilchomans to reveal their young age with a short finish, but this one lasts. A lovely, smooth finish with licorice, smoke, ash and pepper.
Balance (23/25): This is really a well balanced whisky from Kilchoman. Maybe a simple whisky, meaning there is not a lot of development, but it is really rich and powerful.
