Nordic Whisky #183 - Helsinki Distilling Company 100 % Rye Malt
Helsinki Distilling Company 100 % Rye Malt, 3 YO, 47.5 %
The Helsinki Distilling Company 100 % Rye Malt comes with the subtitle The Very First Whiskey Release. Then you understand what a big deal this product is for the young Finnish distillery.
The Helsinki Distilling Company was established in 2014. They have 300 and 1500 litre pot stills, and an annual production 30 000 litre. They produce whiskey, gin, applejack and aquavit.
The Helsinki Distilling Company 100 % Rye Malt was made using malted rye from Viking Malt in Lahti.
This is a small batch product, a vatting of 10 casks. The casks were tiny though, 28 litre French oak casks. The total outturn was therefore a mere 580 bottles.
Nose: Peppery and sweet. Chocolate and coffee notes. It actually reminds me of Polugar (Russian bread wine based on rye) on the nose. A lot of rye sweetness with a mild touch of spices. Soft and well integrated. White chocolate and a touch of rowan berries.
Taste: Medium body, and a bit dry. Minty and sweet. Dark chocolate, mild spices and some oakiness. Again the Polugar notes.
Finish: Medium long finish. Still a bit dry and minty. Now even more herbal, perhaps. Cool eucalyptus and white sugar.
Comments: Cool and pleasant. Very drinkable, even if it is not super exciting.
