Glentauchers 1996 18 YO Liquid Art, 51,3 %

The independent bottler Liquid Art has just released their fifth whisky which is an 18 YO Glentauchers. I have only tasted two Glentauchers before, both 30 YO, so I am really looking forward to try this one.

Glentauchers is located in Speyside. Glentauchers is still rarely seen as a single malt, which means that the majority of the malt whisky that's produced at the distillery is used for blends.

Todays whisky was distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2014. It was matured in a bourbon cask and there was a total of 131 bottles.

Nose (23/25): Vanilla and cream are the first to meet my nose. A really smooth and delicate nose. Fresh, with lime and eucalyptus.  After some time in the glass, the aromas evolved and became rich and fruity. Lots of melon notes. Still the creaminess is present, melon flavored yoghurt comes to mind. A hint of cardamom and oakiness. The smell reminds me of summer; light and fresh!

Taste (23/25): Smooth and rich. Vanilla, fudge and chili. Hot chili! How cool is that?! Very clean on the palate.

Finish (22/25): A peppery finish with a lot of chili and chocolate. Chili chocolate, actually, which is very nice. A lingering finish with eucalyptus and lime.

Balance (23/25): Wow, this whisky surely made a jump from the creamy and fruity nose to the powerful taste of chili! But I like that. As I have said before, a whisky does not necessarily have to smell and taste the same to be a very good whisky. I like the surprises this Glentauchers gave me.
