Glenlivet Captain's Reserve
Glenlivet Captain's Reserve, NAS, 40 %
A new addition to the Glenlivet core range was released just a short while ago. The Glenlivet Captain's Reserve has a somewhat unusual finish in ex-Cognac casks. Not very often we see that from Scottish distillers, although you will see in another review in a few days that Pernod Ricard (the company that owns Glenlivet) obviously have a few cognac casks here and there.
The name of this expression is inspired by Captain William Smith Grant, the great-grandson of George Smith who founded the Glenlivet.
The Glenlivet Captain's Reserve will be launched in Norway on 2018-11-02 and NOK 585 (10454301). You can get it already in the UK at around GBP 48.
Nose: A lot of fruity notes to be found here. I detect apples and pears, ripe and solid as a base. Then there's top notes of citrus, and elegant swirls of grape juice. Vanilla and dark, sugary notes. Feels surprisingly rich for an ABV of 40 %.
Taste: Medium body and sweetness. The palate does not quite reach the same level as the nose. It is still pleasant enough, with mainly orchard fruits dipped in a light and peppery caramel sauce.
Finish: Medium long finish. The fruitiness is steadily dialed down, and the caramel is dialed up. Add to that a fair amount of chocolate and an herbal twist. Nuts and a mild oakiness.
Comments: So the captain does have something nice stashed away, eh?
