Nordic whisky #232 - Eiktyrne Quadruple Batch I
Eiktyrne Quadruple Batch I, 3 YO, 52.6 %
Busy days for Norwegian single malt. On Friday this week we will see a brand new release from Det Norske Brenneri. At least I believe it will be released now. It was supposed to come out in September, but due to production delays it was deferred to November. Now it appears to have disappeared from all product lists, but I will keep my fingers crossed.
The name “Quadruple” in this case does not refer to the number of destillations (it is double distilled), but rather to the number of different cask types used. It has been matured in virgin American oak, small bloodtub casks, ex-Brandy casks and casks that have previously held Montilla-Moriles PX sherry.
The Eiktyrne Quadruple Batch I will be sold at NOK 740 (50 cl bottle).
Nose: A warm hug of a nose (bear with me, please). Warm apple pie with cinnamon, white pepper and honey. Hints of toasted oak, strawberries and mixed fresh herbs.
Taste: Rich and full bodied mouthfeel. Quite spicy and complex. A full symphony of flavors straight off → peppers, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, fennel, thyme and mint. There is a fruity base of orchard fruits as well.
Finish: Medium long finish. Spicy all the way. Tending towards dry in character. More green notes towards the end.
Comment: Impressively complex. It comes across as something like Japanese in style, and that is high praise indeed.
Score 88/100
