Carpathian Single Malt Amarone Cask Collection (2023)

Carpathian Single Malt Amarone Cask Collection (2023), NAS, 46%

My first ever review of a single malt from Romania. This whisky is produced by Carpathian Single Malt (Alexandrion Saber Distilleries 1789)

From the official product page we find the following info:

“Matured initially in 200L select Kentucky bourbon barrels this whisky was then transferred to 225L Amarone casks of European oak which previously held Amarone wine for 5-6 years. Sourced from a family winery located in Fumane, Valpolicella region, Italy. Finished for just over one year this whisky will appeal to the discerning whisky connoisseur.”

The age is not disclosed, but as the distillery started production in 2017, this whisky is fairly young.

The Carpathian Single Malt Amarone Cask Collection (2023) is available in Norway at NOK 667 (15812001).

Nose: Begins gently with a harmonious blend of oak and a medley of spices, presenting an earthy character. Over time, it unfolds to reveal darker fruits like cherries and raisins, with hints of leather and vanilla adding complexity.

Taste: A medium body with emphasis on spice, notably a peppery zest. It's complemented by a spectrum of red berries, both in their fresh, ripe state and as concentrated, sticky jam.

Finish: Medium length. Transitioning to a sweeter profile with the richness of berry and honey jam. A subtle dry oakiness emerges towards the end, providing balance.

Comment: Sticky in a good way.
