Bunnahabhain 1976 36 YO Hart Brothers
Bunnahabhain 1976 36 YO Hart Brothers, 45,5 %
Today I am presenting a rather old whisky from the Islay distillery Bunnahabhain. The Bunnahabhain 1976 36 YO has been bottled by the IB Hart Brothers, and is imported to Sweden by Whiskytaste Sweden.
You can buy this whisky at Systembolaget at SEK 2600 (item number 84024).
This whisky was reviewed in a full blind tasting. I did not know what whiskies were served.
Nose (21/25): Slightly reminiscent of a fresh and dry prosecco. Dry sawdust. Vanilla and marshmallows after a few minutes. A hint of salt.
Taste (20/25): The mouthfeel is thin. Spicy caramel, lots of pepper, chili, licorice and salt. Quite oaky. A bit overwhelming.
Finish (19/25): Oaky, dry, slightly hard and somewhat bitter. Almost no sweetness at all - except for a few bits of very dry caramel fudge.
Balance (20/25): I am left with a distinct feeling that this whisky should have been bottled at least a couple of years earlier. A bit sad to find out after the tasting that this was a very old Bunna, as this is one of my favorite distilleries. But then again this shows both that single cask expressions sometimes can give you surprises, and that old whiskies from your favorite distillery does not automatically equal fantastic whisky. Blind tasting is honest, at least.
