Nordic Whisky #102 - Braunstein E:5
Braunstein E:5, NAS, 60,8 %
I continue to work my way through a selection of whiskies from Danish distillery Braunstein. This time around I will try the Braunstein E:5. It has been matured in an Oloroso sherry cask, bottled on 2013-11-01, with a total outturn of 300 bottles (500 ml each). This is a very peated expression, made with malt peated at 60 ppm phenols.
There is typically one Edition release (E:?) every year, and I have previously reviewed both the releases from 2011 and 2012.
The Braunstein E:5 is still available to buy at DKK 1850 from the distillery shop online.
Nose: Chocolate (both milk chocolate and the darker kind), deep sherry notes, some vanilla and oakiness. Very rich and full. The peat smoke is fully integrated, and works as a solid base and a spice, if you will. Great stuff.
Taste: Soft, delicate and rich. Again the rich sherry notes, mixed with mild spices and vanilla.
Finish: Medium long finish. The sweetness tends towards chocolate with bits of dried ginger now. A touch of fresh herbs in the end. Maybe a bit too herbal?
Comments: Again a very fine effort from Braunstein. Hats off to the team!
