Braunstein 15:2

So, here's the peated expression released by Danish distillery Braunstein last Autumn. Braunstein is to me one of the most exciting distilleries in the Nordic countries right now. They consistently release whiskies of high quality. I have reviewed most of their releases so far, and you can find an overview here.

Braunstein release two expressions in their Library Collection every year. The Braunstein 15:2 is a peated whisky, matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-calvados casks. It is a limited release of 1000 bottles, as always in this series.

You can still buy the Braunstein 15:2 online from the distillery at DKK 795.

Nose: Light and fruity. I find baked apples, light peat, soft maltiness, chocolate, marshmallows, vanilla, and mild oakiness in the form of dry saw dust. The light fruitiness will partly be influence from the calvados casks I assume.

Taste: Soft and caressing on the palate. Again there is a light fruitiness here - ripe apples and pears. It is both oily and smooth. Then I find chocolate mousse smoke! Lovely!

Finish: Medium long finish. It remains light and smooth, with a very light peatiness. I find it almost a bit too fragile towards the end. It is not watery, it just seems ... about to fall apart. But I have already had my chocolate mousse, so I am OK with it really.

Comments: Wonderful chocolate mousse on the palate!
