Nordic Whisky #243 - Box 2011 8 YO Sherry (Selected Swedes)
Box 2011 8 YO Sherry (Selected Swedes), 53.2 %
This is one of three recent releases from Swedish independent bottler Selected Malts, all produced at High Coast Distillery (formerly known as Box Whisky). I brought home a bottle of the Box 2011 8 YO Sherry (Selected Swedes). The other two releases in the series are an 8 YO American Virgin Oak and an 8 YO ex-Islay Barrel. See the official product page.
The Box 2011 8 YO Sherry (Selected Swedes) was distilled on 2011-11-26, matured in a single sherry hogshead, and bottled on 2020-01-23. The total outturn was 490 bottles (50 cl).
The is still available to buy in Sweden at SEK 886 (400102).
Nose: Hmm… I get notes of old, almost rotten oak. Some sulphur as well - in the guise of bicycle tire repair kit and dark leather. Behind this unwelcome apron of initial aromas I find sherry notes, polish and assorted dried fruits. Sugary and dark. Hard to pick up any further details though - too much noise on the signal to get a good reception.
Taste: Medium body and dry-ish mouthfeel. The odd oaky notes and the sulphur is still with us - in a big way. Pepper and coffee. Dark chocolate and raisins.
Finish: Medium long. Still with the weird oakiness and sulphur character that does not sit well with me at all. Watery with a bitter-ish side note.
Comment: Sorry guys, this was not very enjoyable. I do not believe the High Coast Distillery would ever have released this themselves.
