Berry Bros & Rudd Islay Reserve (2023)

Berry Bros & Rudd Islay Reserve (2023), 45.3 %

Matured in ex-bourbon casks. There has been a few releases under this name from Berry Bros & Rudd. Confusingly it seems that sometimes this has been a blended malt and at other times, like with this one, it is a single malt. The distillery is undisclosed, but I would not be overly surprised if this was sourced from Caol Ila.

The Berry Bros & Rudd Islay Reserve goes on sale in Norway this week, at NOK 838 (16623001).

Nose: The aroma is dense with the heavy, maritime and sweet peatiness characteristic of Islay. It carries a distinctly briny quality, evoking the sea's essence. In the background, there's a hint of greenness, like a blend of seaweed and freshly cut grass, adding an interesting contrast.

Taste: Medium body with a somewhat dry character. It's an intriguing mix: a pinch of salt, a sprinkle of ashes, and a dash of tropical fruits, combining the ruggedness of the sea with a hint of exotic sweetness.

Finish: The finish is medium-long, bringing back the green note, now reminiscent of fresh herbs. When paired with milk chocolate, it culminates in a satisfying finale.

Comment: Comfort whisky.
