Balvenie Tun 1509 - Batch 2
Balvenie Tun 1509 - Batch 2, NAS, 50,3 %
This is the follow-up to the very successful Balvenie Tun 1401, which was released in 8 batches. This is the second release from Tun 1509, the first release was released last year.
Balvenie Tun 1509 - Batch 2 is made from 32 casks. 23 American oak casks and 9 European oak Sherry casks. They were left to marry for a few months in the tun before being bottled at 50.3% ABV. The total outturn was 8500 bottles. For some reason I only find info on the first batch on Balvenie's website.
The Balvenie Tun 1509 - Batch 2 is available to buy in Sweden at SEK 2599 (8753601). It has not yet been released in Norway, but we might see it in November...
Nose (22/25): Strawberries and vanilla ice-cream, served with biscuits, dried fruits and a glass of fine sherry on the side. I like it. It is well-balanced, pleasant and comfortable.
Taste (22/25): More sherried to taste. Overall a bit 'darker' now. The fruits are fruitier and drier, if you know what I mean. The vanilla and lighter sweetness is now more like caramel and honey. There is a slight note of something bitter or burnt or with a bit of an edge. It does not take anything away, but it is noticeable.
Finish (21/25): Medium length. Honey now changes into maple syrup. The sweetness becomes darker still. A relatively heavy finish.
Balance (22/25): A heavy dram, and a fine one at that.
Score (87/100)
